The USD Alumni Staff is composed of ten staff members, six of which are alumni of the University of San Diego, and multiple student workers. We work as a team to enhance the quality of the alumni experience. Please join us at one of our future events or visit us in the Degheri Alumni Center, Suite 137.

|Charles Bass, Senior Director

Charles Bass joined the University of San Diego in June 2011 as director of Alumni Relations and is responsible for overall management of the university’s alumni relations efforts. In addition to private sector experience, Bass has spent more than 15 years in higher education advancement and has worked on the staff of the Villanova University Alumni Association, as well as served as the senior alumni relations officer at the University of Denver and at his alma mater, The University of Tulsa.
Bass has worked regionally and nationally to advance the alumni relations profession, serving in a variety of volunteer roles for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He served as a faculty member for CASE’s “Newcomers in Alumni Relations” workshop and as a regional volunteer for CASE District II, District IV and District VI. Bass is also a co-founder of PCUAD, an association of private college and university alumni directors.

Kara Marsh Proffitt started working in Alumni Relations in 2004. She now serves the office and the university as an Associate Director overseeing the Alumni Associations 23 regional chapters, all marketing, communications, social media and technologies, affinity programming including special interest groups, USD's professional schools and athletics, and oversight of Outreach & Regional Committees for the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
|David Stephens, Associate Director

David Stephens has served as an associate director of Alumni Relations since 2003. A successful, experienced administrator and institutional events coordinator, he has three decades of experience in higher education alumni administration. Stephens served as director of Alumni Relations for The Cooper Union in New York City and as associate vice president of Alumni Relations at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, coordinating institutional programs both national and international prior to his appointment at USD. Stephens currently serves as project manager for programs including Alumni Honors, homecoming and reunions, class reunions, giving, Alumni Mass, international alumni events and special projects.
|Sarah Zakaria, Associate Director

Sarah Zakaria serves as the associate director of Alumni Relations. In this role, she is responsible for young alumni and student-alumni relations including providing continuity, leadership cultivation and program consultation for the Student Alumni Association and the Young Alumni Network. Zakaria also oversees scholarship program management including USD Alumni Endowed Scholarship, Senior Class Legacy as well as several alumni and memorial scholarships. Through this work, she promotes philanthropy education and continues to cultivate and steward alumni to be life-long donors of University of San Diego. Prior to joining USD, Zakaria was the assistant director of Alumni Relations at UC San Diego. In addition, she has worked at the San Diego Natural History Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution.
|Erin (Burke) Gunning '05, Volunteer Coordinator

As the volunteer coordinator for Alumni Relations, Erin Gunning '05 strives to recruit, manage and recognize volunteers returning home to USD. In her previous role as a social worker, Gunning centered around building and strengthening relationships amongst individuals and families, working primarily in substance abuse and early mental health. She brings several years of experience from her work at both Colorado State University and the University of Notre Dame.

Joyce Chua joined the Alumni Relations team in 2012 as an Executive Assistant after three years in the travel industry. In Fall of 2013 Joyce was promoted to Assistant Director responsible for working with the Alumni Association's 23 domestic regional clubs.
Joyce graduated from USD in 2009 with a BBA in Business Administration, emphasis in International Business and a minor in International Relations. While attending USD she took part in the Founder’s Chapel Choir and was a Torero Squad leader.
|Crystal Peterson '10, Assistant Director

Crystal Peterson is Assistant Director of Marketing for Alumni Relations, working to enhance alumni outreach for regional programming while engaging with the expanding USD community including parents and friends through various marketing strategies from print to social media.
She graduated in 2010 with a degree in Communications and a minor in Business Administration. Peterson comes from a background of event management in Las Vegas before returning to San Diego to pursue a career in marketing, serving three years in corporate marketing prior to joining USD Alumni Relations. Her passion for USD stemmed from her undergraduate experience after being involved in many facets of university life including Associated Students, Greek Life, and University Ministry. She looks forward to work for what she considers her second home and further engage with the great people of this campus community.
|Mary Cannon '12, Executive Assistant

As Office Manager of Alumni Relations, Mary Cannon is responsible for maintaining all departmental budgets, managing office work flow, and acting as lead support for the director of Alumni Relations. As the first point of contact for the department, she strives to provide exceptional customer service to a large volume of visitors by creating a welcoming office environment.
Cannon graduated from USD in 2012 with a BA in sociology and a minor in theology and religious studies. She began working in University Relations as a student during her freshman year, and is very happy to return to the Degheri Alumni Center as a full-time employee.

As director of International Constituent Relations, Claudia Iracema Gonzales serves as USD’s primary point of contact in University Relations for alumni, parents and friends of the university who are living and working abroad. Gonzales works with our international Torero Club programs, including our annual European, Asia, and Mexico reunions and our local Comité México activities, among others. She works closely with the International Center and with faculty and staff whose initiatives are designed to leverage the resources and interests of our global USD family. Gonzales is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
|Ana Brown, Executive Assistant in International Constituent Relations
BA, Texas A&M University, Liberal Arts
Ana has a BA in Liberal Arts from Texas A&M University. She also has studied in Switzerland at Geneva University, in Luxembourg at the Miami University of Ohio European Center, and the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This broad educational experience provides Brown with a heightened awareness of the value of diversity and is an ideal platform for her work in International Constituent Relations (ICR).
She began working in USD’s newly established ICR office in 2011. Brown is responsible for a multitude of tasks such as managing all of the day to day office activities, maintaining the department's budget, and the planning and coordinating of special events on campus and internationally. She works closely with international alumni to help Toreros around the globe maintain their connection to USD.
